Drawing Something In My Hand

A recording from Samantha Dion Baker's live video
17

Hi everyone!

I’m so glad some of you could join me for yesterday’s spontaneous live. I sketched something in my hand—a recurring theme in my sketchbooks ever since I was asked to illustrate two cookbooks featuring hands in action (and this one). These projects completely changed how I see and draw hands, and now they’ve become a natural part of my work. After all, our hands are constantly holding things throughout the day, making them the perfect subject for a sketch journal. In fact, my Substack profile image even features my hand holding a flower.

I was able to complete the page I started during the live stream, and I’m sharing it here so you can see how it turned out. It’s always interesting to see how a finished page evolves—sometimes it looks completely different from what I originally imagined.

The next Draw Your World meetup is on Friday at 3pm. We will be talking about all of the ways we can create areas of focus in our work. The invite was shared in the subscriber chat. All paid subscribers also receive the recording if they can’t make the live session. Anyone who is considering upgrading, this is a good week to start!

Note: I have written a prompt post about holding things in our hands, including my history with drawing lots of hands, and many examples. You can find that post here: Prompt No. 2: In Your Hand
