Thank you for joining me this afternoon for a spontaneous hour of drawing and painting live.
I spotted this mother and child at the Whitney Museum yesterday while wandering with Erika Lee Sears, and I knew instantly I wanted to draw them. Sometimes the urge to draw something just hits me—for no real reason other than they made me smile. And maybe that smile is exactly what’s needed in these hectic times.
I loved the quiet moment they were sharing, and it was enough to take me back to that day: art, friendship, and wandering in the summer heat. Here is the finished page in my sketchbook.
Here’s a link to the travel brush I was using. It’s a wonderful brush—great for covering large areas, but also perfect for fine details once you get the hang of controlling the water. The point is incredible.
What an honor to be a guest on the Create! Magazine Art & Cocktails podcast— especially because Ekaterina Popova (Kat) discovered my work right here on Substack.
Kat is truly one of the most generous voices in the art community. She’s a steady champion of artists, asking thoughtful questions, and offering a calm, grounded presence. It was immediately so easy to chat and get to know each other.
In one short written piece, she somehow captured the heart of what I do—and the podcast conversation brings it all full circle.

Draw Your Adventures has been out in the world for two and a half weeks, and it’s already finding its way into travel backpacks, onto desks, and onto bookshelves—much like my previous books did. That feels like a good sign, especially for the third book in a series. Thank you, thank you for all the support and sharing so far—and please keep the positive reviews coming!
Though I haven’t listed it on my website yet, I am sending signed copies from my studio. Please reach out by email if you are interested!
The next Draw Your World Meetup is Tuesday, August 5. We are drawing and painting “A Place to Sit” from page 71 in Draw Your Adventures. The invitation was sent in the subscriber chat.
