Thank you for this post. You have shared a lot of great information on drawing skills in this post . I will definitely practice these skills as per your guidance.
It’s probably helpful to lots of people but these posts about something *seemingly* simple like ellipses are so amazing to me as a not-total-novice-anymore but still very much in the early learning phase. Thank you, Sam!
I always enjoy your meet-ups…sometimes I can’t be on the whole time as it may be during work hours, but I do follow along on the replay. Thank you for taking the time to plan and host them! The addition of guest artists is interesting too.
👋 glad you like that. You’ll start to see more. After I wrote this I noticed all of the places I missed. Manhole covers, records on a turntable, the Starbucks sign near my studio, trash cans and fire hydrants, street signs….
I'm on Cara but a trip to the vet today curtailed my plans for it for the day. (She's fine, just needs eye drops.) At any rate, I'm not posting art yet, that will happen soon and in the meantime I followed you and am happy to find you there.
I have lots of opinions about AI but the bottom line for me is: Pay people. Get permission. Stop stealing. No means no.
And this is a great lesson on ellipses. They really are everywhere and unfortunately a weakness of mine which leads to wonky cups and bowls and vases. I'll get there! Thanks for leading the way.
Vivian Maier's exhibition sounds impressive! And I love the ellipses tips and your weekend journal spreads are precious. Thanks for sharing your sliver of the world.
You just blew my mind with the ellipses talk! I see them all over the living room right now and am excited to draw with them in mind.
I'm in the same camp with Cara and not being ready to leave Instagram. I don't think it's a bad thing, but I still have to watch how much time I spend on social media in general. It's too fun and I lose track of time!
Hi Beth, so glad the ellipse thing made you look around. I wasnt sure if it was an obvious thing, but either way it is still good to remind people to look for these consistent shapes in our world!
And same, same... adding another thing is just going to make me spend even more time. But if I can cut back on one thing to make time for the other then I figure its a wash. TIme will tell.
Sam, I was so curious to read your thoughts about AI. I wondered if you would post your work if you weren’t a professional, if it was just for you. I received some strange comments and shares on some of my posts, and I was confused. One of my favorite authors and illustrators, Vanessa Brantley Newton made a post that some of her content had been hijacked. She mentioned a new app, but I didn’t know if it was for professionals only. If all my favorite artists leave IG, I will too. I watched disturbing doc on Netflix about an influencer and a cult, and I started to worry where all this is headed. I work on a college campus, and AI is a huge topic and threat. My “big world” anxiety has ratcheted up to pre-covid heights…worrisome.
I watched a doc on Netflix a long while ago about Vivian Maier and was absolutely amazed. A ferry ride sounds magical, and I love Sufjan Stevens…sounds from my childhood. Have a nice weekend!
Hi Stacy, so nothing has happened to me... yet.. but I am aware that it could, and feel terrible for artists whose work has been stolen. I found out that my book, Draw Your Day, is in the AI database a while back and thought that was so wild (because I never saw myself as a writer, let alone one whose writing would be used for training). My publicist dealt with removing it, I think! I mean the whole idea that we just have no control or idea what is happening is the scary thing.
I really appreciate your comments about drawing just for the pleasure of drawing.

This is mind blowing.. this shift my perspective when looking at objects. Checking out your Skillshare class now.. Thank you Samatha

Ellipses aren't so simple! You might think they are but it isn't easy to get them right. I am glad this feels inspiring to you, Pam!
Thanks for the tip about Cara.

Joining for any or all is great. I am so glad you enjoy the recordings, and the special guest meetups!
loved loved loved the bit on ellipses - I definitely need to be drawing more! and they really are everywhere!

I found you on Cara! I hope to see some of your artwork soon over there.
I'm still trying to navigate how to get Glaze. once I've got that I'll be better about sharing.

I love your art. You are so talented. I dream about being this good. ❤️
Thank you, Rita. Just years of doing it daily!
I think your compositions are
Unique, clever and engaging.
Thank you, Ginny!
