It was really wonderful! I am looking forward to doing it again. And in the meantime I am going to make it to more of your drawing sessions. And yes to drawing for ourselves.. tho my work is a strange mix of being for myself and for others. Weirdly drawing those dogs yesterday felt more for myself than my journal entries. Its all mixed up for me!
that's a key difference with art journaling and written journaling: pictures will spark a memory without writing every bit of it. written journaling is a lot of over-sharing, if you're me.
I destroy my written journals about once every 10 years. just too hard to haul them around. but this May I am making a commitment (on my birthday at the end of the month) to start doing art journals. hopefully I'll leave them be. ;)
I love that you have captured so many years of memories. how lovely that is. how unusual as well to know so much of your life.
I love these little peeks into your life and work. Indeed, it's a lovely way to record memories, especially for a visual person such as yourself. Thank you for sharing them. I'm doing much the same thing, in just as casual a way, by writing my poems over the years. Like your sketch pad pages, they create quite a storyline.
59 journals. Wow. What a legacy you are building. 'My Draw your day' has starts and stops. Right now I am going through a 'stop' phase and have not be consistently keeping things up. I know you have talked about this before in other posts and sharing - but I feel compelled to start/finish a page on the day that it all happened. And if I can't do that I just don't. I have not quite figured out if that is a conscious thing or a nudge from my subconscious. However I regret not doing something. I know that your process is sketching things out, and coming back later to finish things but does that apply only to your travel journals or is this something you do with the day-to-day. I am curious. Thank you.
Wow, 59 sketchbooks, that is amazing! I remember that day at the botanical gardens so well, and the zoom! It's all very beautiful and special!
There are more if you count the tiny ones. Its piling up but I will keep going..
I remember you and Ken sitting there with me as I attended the zoom in the background while we painted. It is one reason I love that spread.
This was lovely to read. I really appreciated the personal stories behind each page ❤️
Thank you for sharing these special pages. So inspiring and a reminder of the importance of drawing for ourselves!
It was awesome drawing with you! Thank you for spending the hour with us -- it was wonderful!

just astonishing. love seeing all of these amazing memories.
thank you. As you know, once the gates open it is hard to stop.
"It will take weeks." - And what inspiring, colourful weeks they'll be. :)
Its a gift and maybe a little bit of a burden. Ha! But I think they will appreciate those weeks whenever they decide to look through them.
Really love this. New on Substack and just found you.

I listen to the Rick Ruben chat as well, and thought of you and the style of work you do and life you capture.
Your sketch and meet with Beth earlier this week was fantastic. It was great to see both your styles happening at the same time. .
