I can feel the disappointment and frustration you must have experienced over that cover without you actually saying the words, Sam. I bet you could have screamed or cried at moments too! How infuriating that the cover design went through so many hands before the chose a plain text one instead. All that energy expended! But at least you can clearly see your “final” design influenced the one they made up very heavily.
Yes frustrating but looking back, a valuable experience. I’m not sure the final design has anything to do with all of the illustrated versions but it is simple enough to not compete with what’s inside. :)
Sam, your pain is palpable. But thinking about what you had, rather than what you didn't have, I am struck by your actually having a relationship with the iconic feminist. A dream we would all love to realize!
Love the BTS look at the process and am bummed they didn't choose an illustrated cover! They were awesome and certainly more eye-catching than the one they went with. Will a paperback edition offer another opportunity?!
I resonate with this so much, Samantha. Thank you for sharing! This story is also a gentle reminder for me of why it's so vital to share one's work with the world. Thank you, thank YOU.
It’s so nice to share this work. People know of my illustrations inside of the book but don’t know about the cover. I kept it quiet for so long about what we went through in this process.
Thanks for being my Mother's Day gift to myself. The Gloria Steinem story sold me on taking the plunge, I've been a fan of yours since I opened an Instagram account and have all your books.

I was very much with you on the journey for this one! PS. I like your cover better!
And, by the way, your covers were so much better!

Thanks for sharing your amazing experience! Too bad they didn’t use your cover, it is so much better!
Ohh that must be a roller coaster of feelings, thank you for sharing Sam! P.S.- I like your cover much more ✨️
Wonderful story, amazing you hung in right to the end.. They need one of your books to chill out. Loved the left one, all funky and eye catching.
Thank you!
Thank you so much for sharing! Their loss. Loved the sparse cityscape, too

Yes that is the best part, just having my time with Gloria 🩶
What a story!! Disappointing for sure but a memorable opportunity all the same. I can only imagine what the process was like!
The complicated cover design process times ten!

We thought so but no paperback was printed.

Thank you for sharing - this was such a great lesson that I shared with my 3 college age daughters.... thank you for your honesty...
