No. 8: A Neighborhood Library & A Virtual Weekend Workshop
Plus an update on the still life challenge and museum book sightings!
When my friend Mallory asked me to draw our local library as a way to support the community and a “library system in crisis,” I walked under the Manhattan Bridge and over to Adams Street that very same day to scope it out. I ended up saying yes to Mallory’s request, but a touch reluctantly, as the numerous windows and the painted signage wrapped around the building struck me as intimidating to render, but in the end, I’m happy with how my take on the Dumbo branch turned out. It always feels good to make a drawing around my neighborhood that fits right into my natural style (and my sketchbook) and can easily contribute to a greater good. My picture itself can’t help the library, but if some merchandise based on it can be sold to raise money, then it can serve a purpose and everyone wins. An Update on a Successful 7-Day Challenge
Ohn Mar and I received so many wonderful entries for the still-life challenge that we hosted last week. Hundreds of posts were shared with us via direct message, email, and by using the hashtag on Instagram #samanthaandohnmar7day. I didn’t realize just how many people would participate, but it was time well spent going through all of the posts and messages. I was able to connect with many artists during the week and nurture some new connections as well as older ones. As I expected, painting seven still lifes was just what I needed to get into a relaxing rhythm with my own practice. Thank you to everyone who joined in!
A New Workshop: Discover the Artistic Beauty of Home - April 21 & 22
Ohn Mar Win and I have teamed up again, and are thrilled to invite you to a special weekend workshop on the theme of Bathroom and Kitchen, where we will explore the inspiration that can be found in our everyday spaces. In this fast-paced world, we often overlook the simple things around us that can spark creativity. However, by practicing gratitude for what we have and paying close attention to our surroundings, we can start to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.
Ohn Mar and I will be conducting two hours of Zoom sessions per day, where we will explore the form, shape, and contrast of everyday objects found in the bathroom and kitchen. We will encourage you to seek out items in your own bathroom and kitchen to paint, creating something truly unique and personal, although we will provide reference images too.
As you watch us paint, you’ll be able to ask questions and seek advice on the techniques we use or any aspect of the painting process. We will be there to guide you and provide feedback throughout the workshop. Moreover, you’ll be able to interact with other participants and see their work as well. This will be an excellent way to share your ideas, gather inspiration, and learn from other artists’ approaches to the same subjects.
To sum up, during the workshop you’ll get to:
watch 45-minute full-length demos from both of us
witness how we combine watercolor techniques with mixed media
see how we bring everyday objects to life on paper
ask any questions you may have about techniques or materials
Overall, the opportunity to watch two experienced artists paint live and follow along with us and other participants will be an immersive and collaborative experience that will help you develop your artistic skills and share with a community of like-minded individuals. So, bring your enthusiasm and creativity, and join us for a weekend full of inspiration and fun! Recordings will be sent to anyone who registers. Click here to join us.
Draw Your Day and Draw Your World Museum Sightings
It has been so wonderful to see my books at two of my favorite New York City art museums this past week. Draw Your Day has been at the MoMA Design Store for a while, and each time I visit the museum I wander to the shop in hopes that it is still there, and it is! (This time I secretly signed a copy.) And a friend who went to the Met texted me a photo of the current display where Draw Your World was standing tall in a stack under some art supplies. If you purchased any of my books at museum shops, please let me know which shops, and if you ever spot one of my books anywhere, send me a snapshot. You will make my day!
Upcoming Classes
Next week I’m going to receive the first edit of my new Skillshare class from the videographer. The title of the class is Drawing Every Day: How to Build Confidence in Your Sketchbook Practice, and I can’t wait to share it with you very soon!
My classes with Derwent hosted by Michaels Stores are returning next month. My first one, Exploring Wood Grain with Derwent Inktense Paints and Line Makers, is scheduled for April 25 at 4pm EST. More info and the link to book a FREE spot will come in my next newsletter.

Love how the library piece turned out! Going to the library has always felt like Christmas and I've been sad to see less books and other types of media occupying more space at the local libraries over the last several years.
