Drawing a West Village Locksmith

A recording from Samantha Dion Baker’s live video

Thanks to everyone who tuned in when I went live earlier today. It was such fun to see so many familiar names pop up in real time. Here’s the finished piece along with the reference photo. After I signed off I spent another forty minutes or so refining the drawing/painting. Lots of back-and-forth between ink, paint, and small adjustments until it landed where I wanted it.

In the live session someone asked about what flourescent paints I use, and I mentioned that the brightness doesn’t always show up when you scan. I am pretty happy with how this turned out!
The original reference photo.

I also saw that many people were asking about my tools, palette, and sketchbook setup. I pulled together two posts that have everything I mentioned on the live, and then some. Note that the deeper materials breakdowns and sketchbook-making posts are for paid subscribers, but I share plenty about the tools I use in all three of my books as well!

Reminder that I am hosting a composition review on zoom for paid supporters. If you haven’t yet registered, check the subscriber chat for the link.

Thank you RAJ KAUR, Josh Gosfield, Amy Makechnie, Angela Cappetta, H Maria Armijo, and many others for tuning into my live video! Join me for my next live video in the app.
